NEW FILEMAKER SOFTWARE ADDS 5 NEW PLATFORMS Mac OS X, Windows 2000, Linux,
Pocket PC, i-mode support SANTA CLARA, CA -- May 14, 2001 -- To meet the needs of changing and more mobile workgroups, today FileMaker announced a new line of database software to run on five more platforms: Mac OS X , Windows 2000, Linux, Pocket PC and i-mode. Supporting more platforms -- plus improved fit with IT requirements and rich new Web publishing features -- gives workgroups the flexible, instant data management they demand, FileMaker said. The flagship of the new product line, FileMaker Pro 5.5 is the world's first software to both run in native mode on Mac OS X, Apple's next-generation operating system, and gain logo-certification for Windows 2000. FileMaker Pro 5.5 is available today in the U.S. (see companion news release for details). FileMaker intends to be the world's leading supplier of database software for knowledge workers and workgroups ranging from entire small businesses to departments within the enterprise, and the new products will keep pace with workgroups' changing needs, said Dominique Goupil, FileMaker president. "Knowledge workers use more computing devices in more locations than ever. They also have to create and share information almost instantly, across the Web and other platforms, and connect with corporate data sources," Goupil said. "The new FileMaker software will meet those workgroup needs." Industry observers note that software such as FileMaker, which is easy enough for knowledge workers to use, can be a boon to stressed IT departments. "IT organizations coping with an applications backlog increasingly need to enable end-user development of database applications," said David Folger, vice president, META Group. "Vendors who can address this ease of use requirement will be well-positioned in this market."
The New FileMaker 5.5 Product Line FileMaker Server 5.5: To match the evolving platform preferences of workgroups, FileMaker will add Linux (Red Hat certified) support to FileMaker Server 5.5. Linux is growing rapidly as a server platform, especially for workgroup deployments, and has been requested by FileMaker customers recently. FileMaker Server 5.5 will also run on Windows 2000 logo-certified, Windows NT, Mac OS X (native, using Cocoa) and Mac OS 8.6 and later. To better fit with standard IT requirements, FileMaker Server 5.5 will include authentication of guests against a Windows domain and support for LDAP (lightweight directory access protocol) directory service. FileMaker Pro 5.5 Unlimited: New features and improved reliability will enable even more robust Web database publishing. Using a FileMaker solution from a browser will be a richer experience, since more relational and script functions are supported on the Web in the new product. The improved Web Companion in FileMaker Pro 5.5 Unlimited includes a new multi-threaded HTTP server (1.1 standard) and is expected to provide higher performance over the Web or intranets. FileMaker intends to ship FileMaker Server 5.5 and FileMaker Pro 5.5 Unlimited in the U.S. this summer. FileMaker Developer 5.5: The nearly 20,000 corporate and commercial FileMaker developers are a vital part of the product's success. FileMaker Developer 5.5 is the newest version of the essential toolkit for developing and deploying professional FileMaker solutions. Developers can resolve code problems with the new script debugger, and view database structure with a new database reporting and documenting tool, among the new features in FileMaker Developer 5.5. FileMaker intends to give FileMaker Developer Conference attendees a special preview version Aug. 12, 2001, and to ship the U.S. product in the fall. Pricing for these new products will be announced later.
FileMaker Mobile directions: Pocket PC and i-mode FileMaker announced today that, with the growing importance of Pocket PC in corporations, it intends to create FileMaker Mobile Companion for Pocket PC, expected in the first half of 2002. Workgroups will benefit from the ability to share and synch data among desktop databases and handheld devices using either of the most popular handheld platforms. In Japan, FileMaker will support the fast-growing i-mode standard for wireless Internet services, developed by NTT DoCoMo. Nearly 23 million customers use i-mode smart mobile phones in Japan to wirelessly access consumer and business services such as stock quotes, train timetables and city guides. FileMaker intends to create FileMaker Mobile Companion for i-mode in Japan, so that i-mode phones can access, search, display and edit FileMaker databases published on the Internet. FileMaker intends to ship FileMaker Mobile Companion for i-mode before the end of 2001. As i-mode technology becomes important in markets beyond Japan, FileMaker will investigate adding i-mode support in those markets.
Citrix MetaFrame and Windows 2000 Terminal Services Customers using FileMaker in these environments may benefit from centralized administration, efficient enterprise-wide deployment of applications, improved capabilities for remote computing, simplified upgrades and lower total cost of ownership. New database software delivers multi-platform support, SANTA CLARA, CA -- May 14, 2001 -- FileMaker announced today the U.S. availability of FileMaker Pro 5.5 database software, which adds support for native Mac OS X and Windows 2000 (logo-certified), enhanced connectivity with corporate data sources, and rich new Web publishing features. FileMaker Pro 5.5 is the world's first software to both run in native mode on Mac OS X, Apple's next-generation operating system, and gain logo-certification for Windows 2000. Designed to increase productivity of knowledge workers and workgroups, FileMaker Pro 5.5 makes it easy via dynamic two-way ODBC to connect workgroup and corporate data.
