新製品FileMaker Pro 5(英語版）をリリース
三製品（FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited、FileMaker 5 Server、
FileMaker 5 Developer）の新バージョンを発表

FileMaker, Inc.（米カリフォルニア州サンタクララ、社長：ドミニーク・Ｐ・グピール）は1999年9月27日（米国時間）、イントラネットでのデータベース共有ならびに様々なデスクトップ・スタンダード、エンタープライズスタンダードとの連携をはかるための主要な新機能を有する、新製品FileMaker Pro 5 (英語版)をリリースしました。また、同社のデベロッパ・アプリケーションやサーバ・アプリケーションの新バージョンを発表したり、Web上でのデータベース・パブリッシング用に設計されたFileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited を紹介するなど、同社のワークグループ・データベース・ソリューションのラインアップを強化しました。

同社は、データベースWebパブリッシングでのリードを強化するため、FileMaker データベースを用いることにより容易にしかもプロフェッショナルなカスタムWebサイトを創れるよう、米Adobe Systems社、米Macromedia社ならびにその他のパートナーとともに作業する計画であることを発表しました。

FileMaker Pro 5は、FileMakerをWeb 上でデータベース情報公開したり共有するための代表的な選択肢とさせた様々な機能をインスタントWebパブリッシング機能に追加しています。CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)に対応したことにより、これで、ブラウザ・ユーザは、オリジナルのレイアウトにてしかも殆ど全く同じデザインエレメントのデータベースを閲覧したり編集することができるようになりました。ユーザは、わずか一回のマウスのクリック操作で、資産管理、プロジェクト管理、人事管理、あるいは業務プロセス管理のためのデータベースを共有することができます。

米Macromedia社は、Dreamweaverソフトウェアで、Web開発者が、XML技術に基づき、FileMaker ProデータベースへのカスタムWebインターフェースを創れるように、FileMakerと協調作業する計画であることを発表しました。

FileMaker ProのデータをWeb上に公開したいデザイナーのために、

Microsoft Office ルック・アンド・フィール, Excel インポートの向上

Microsoft Officeのユーザは、WindowsとMac OS ユーザのどちらも、FileMaker Pro 5の新しいOffice ルック・アンド・フィールをとても快適に感じるでしょう。FileMaker Proのメニュー、ダイアログボックス、ツールバーは、たやすい操作性や早いパスで生産性につなげることを考慮して、Officeスタンダードをフォローしています。ユーザは、ツールバーをドラッグしてどこにでも再配置できます。またツールバーは、FileMaker Proのモードに従って変化します。FileMaker Pro 5 は、Excelユーザがそのスプレッドシートデータを直接FileMaker Proにドラッグ・ドロップするのを可能とさせることによって、Microsoft Excelのデータ利用を向上させサポートしています。FileMaker Pro 5 は、瞬時に、列の名前を分析・変更し、データベースフィールドにデータタイプを割り当てます。そして、そのデータはたちまち新しいスプレッドシートライクな表形式に表示され、この表形式は、クリック操作やドラッグ操作で、簡単にサイズを変えたり、移動したり、ソートしたりすることができます。

また、FileMaker Pro 5は、販売・販売状況報告を自動化したり複数のソフトウェアアプリケーションと連携したりといったように、ユーザが数多くのソフトウェアタスクを自動化したり稼動させることができるようにするWindows OSのActiveX Automationをサポートします。

FileMaker Pro 5は、CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) を新たにサポートしたことにより、 一回のマウス操作でFileMaker ProのダイナミックデータベースをWebに公開できるというように、インスタントWebパブリッシングを向上させています。FileMaker Pro 5のユーザは、五つのスタイルオプション(Classic、Wheat、Purple、Neutral、Text Only)と二つのファンクションオプション(Search Only、Entry Only)という全く新しいセレクションにより、これを用いてFileMaker Proデータベースのプレゼンテーションをこれまで以上にコントロールしやすくなりました。このスタイルのうちの6つは、CSSを用いて実行されるためにInternet Explorer 4.0以降が必要です。

一回のクリックでWeb公開を可能とするためのWeb コンパニオンアーキテクチャーに組み込まれたhttpサーバがFileMaker Pro 5には含まれているため、インスタントデータベースWebパブリッシングを行うためのWebサーバやミドルウェアは不要です。

レイアウト・レポート・アシスタントが新しくなったことで、FileMaker Pro 5ユーザが、色やスタイルを事前設定したりカスタマイズできる多種多様なデータベースレイアウトを迅速かつ簡単に創れるようになりました。このスタイルは、XML形式で定義され、更にカスタマイズするためユーザにより編集可能です。新しくなったレイアウト・レポート・アシスタントは、事業報告書、宛名ラベル、封筒などを瞬時に作成してくれます。

リレーショナルパワーに加えて、FileMaker Pro 5では外部の値を一覧する機能が加わり、ユーザがデータを入力する手間を節約するために外部値一覧として用いることができるようになりました。FileMaker Pro 5は、ユーザがひとつのFileMaker ProデータベースからもうひとつのFileMaker ProデータベースにScriptMaker (FileMaker に組み込まれたpoint and clickプログラミング機能）を取り込むことを可能とさせることにより、ユーザの時間節約にさらに役立っています。

新しいコードベースとしたことで、今やオブジェクト指向のアプローチをとれるようになりました。ただ、FileMaker Proの新ファイルフォーマットはFileMaker Proの過去のバージョンに対して、下方互換ではありません。(過去のバージョンにより作成されたファイルを開くことはできますが、過去のバージョンのFileMaker ProはFileMaker Pro 5で作成されたファイルを開くことはできません。）

FileMaker Pro 5は、QuickTimeやQuickTime VRのサポート、サイズを変更可能なダイアログボックス、ネットワークデータベースセキュリティの向上、オブジェクトの3-D効果 、カスタムカラー、Webカラーパレット、ノートブックPCとの間でFileMaker Proデータを更新するためのデータマージ機能、実用的なチュートリアル等々、数多くの新機能を備えています。

with New Products, Ads, and Support from Leading

SANTA CLARA, Calif., - September. 27, 1999 - Focusing on the growing workgroup- database market and strengthening its lead in database web publishing, FileMaker, Inc. today announced four new software products and a major new advertising campaign. Analysts are commenting favorably on FileMaker's new products and strategy to deliver workgroup solutions.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., - September 27, 1999 - FileMaker, Inc. today released the new FileMaker Pro 5, with major new features for sharing databases over the intranet and integrating with desktop and enterprise standards. The company strengthened its line of workgroup database solutions announcing new versions of its developer and server applications and introduced FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited, designed for publishing databases over the web.

To strengthen its lead in database web publishing, the company announced that it plans to work with Adobe Systems, Allaire Corporation, Macromedia and other partners to make the creation of custom web sites powered by FileMaker databases painless and professional.

FileMaker Pro 5 adds to the Instant Web Publishing features that have made FileMaker a leading choice for publishing and sharing database information via the Web. With support for Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), browser users may now view or edit databases with almost exactly the same design elements in the original layouts. Users, with just one mouse click, can share databases for tracking assets, projects, people or processes.

To fit with corporate desktop standards, FileMaker Pro 5, now Microsoft Windows 2000 ready, features a completely new, yet familiar interface that compliments the look and feel of Microsoft Office. Web Server Connector also allows remote database administration and management via the Internet. Additional copies of FileMaker Pro Unlimited can be added to RAIC (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Computers) server settings for achieving load balancing and fault tolerance. The FileMaker Pro 5 Web Server Connector will run on the most popular web servers on the market today including: Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), Microsoft Personal Web Server (PWS), Netscape Enterprise Server, WebSTAR, AppleShareIP and the Apache web server built into Mac OS X Server. Web authoring industry leaders embrace dynamic database publishing found in FileMaker Pro

By enhancing open standards, such as XML, FileMaker Pro 5 will work with popular web authoring software enabling web authors to publish custom web sites that incorporate dynamic FileMaker Pro data.

Macromedia has announced that they plan to collaborate with FileMaker to integrate Dreamweaver software to allow Web authors to create custom web interfaces to FileMaker Pro databases based on XML technology.

"We're very pleased to be working with FileMaker, Inc. to leverage Dreamweaver's extensibility by integrating with FileMaker Pro. The integration will make it easy for Web developers to use Dreamweaver as the front end for creating powerful data-driven Web applications," said Beth Davis, senior director of product management at Macromedia. "FileMaker Pro users will find that Dreamweaver's powerful design capabilities will enable them to efficiently create powerful Web applications that take advantage of the new features in FileMaker Pro."

Further support for web designers who want to publish FileMaker Pro 5 data on the Web comes from Adobe Systems, developer of GoLive.

"We're pleased to support FileMaker's new dynamic database publishing features. The modular nature of GoLive's architecture enables us to easily update GoLive to support FileMaker Pro data using ODBC and XML," said Hank Skorny, senior director, Internet products group, Adobe Systems. "Developers and designers will have a powerful combination in GoLive and FileMaker Pro for creating visually rich database driven Web sites."

Microsoft Office Look and Feel, Excel Import Enhanced

Both Windows and Mac OS Microsoft Office users will feel very comfortable with the new Office look and feel of FileMaker Pro 5. FileMaker Pro menus, dialog boxes and toolbars now follow the Office standard allowing for easy navigation and a fast path to productivity. Users may drag toolbars to reposition anywhere. The toolbars also change according to modes within FileMaker Pro. FileMaker Pro 5 enhances and supports Microsoft Excel data usage by allowing Excel users to drag and drop their spreadsheet data directly into FileMaker Pro. Instantaneously, FileMaker Pro 5 analyzes and converts column names and assigns data types to database fields. The data is then immediately presented in a new spreadsheet-like Table View in columns, which can be easily resized, reordered and sorted by clicking and dragging.

Now with new built-in ODBC Driver support, FileMaker Pro users may interact with a wide variety of applications for numerous business solutions: Mail Merges with Microsoft Word or other word processors; charting with Microsoft Excel; and diagramming with Visio. Users may simply access FileMaker Pro data from any ODBC compliant tool, their own computer or over the network.

Further support of the FileMaker Pro ODBC Driver has been announced by Allaire Corporation, maker of ColdFusion, the leading web application server.

"We're pleased to add support for the FileMaker Pro ODBC Driver to ColdFusion," said Adam Berrey, product marketing director for Allaire. "By extending ColdFusion to support FileMaker Pro 5, we're giving both ColdFusion and FileMaker developers a broader range of options for quickly building and delivering database-driven web applications that take advantage of the benefits offered by both products."

FileMaker Pro 5 also supports ActiveX automation for Windows OS which allows users to automate and drive numerous software tasks, such as providing automated sales and status reports, spanning multiple software applications.

FileMaker Pro 5 enhances Instant Web Publishing ? the ability to publish a fully dynamic FileMaker Pro database to the web in one mouse click ? with new support of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Users of FileMaker Pro 5 now have finer control over the interaction and presentation of their FileMaker databases with a brand new selection of five style options (Classic, Wheat, Purple, Neutral, Text Only) and two function options (Search Only and Entry Only). Six of the Styles are implemented using Cascading Style Sheets and require Internet Explorer 4.0 or greater

Since FileMaker Pro 5 includes an http server that is built into its Web Companion architecture to allow for one-click publishing, no Web server or middleware software is required for instant database web publishing.

The new Layout and Report Assistant, allows FileMaker Pro 5 users to quickly and easily create a wide variety of database layouts (table views), that can be themed with pre-set or customizable colors and styles. The themes are defined in XML (Extensible Markup Language) format, which can be edited for greater customization by users. The New Layout/Report Assistant instantly creates grouped business reports, mailing labels, envelopes and more.

Adding to its relational power, FileMaker Pro 5 now offers conditional value lists, allowing users to base a value list from another (related) file allowing the action in one field to govern the action in a related field saving data entry time and effort. And FileMaker Pro 5 helps users save even more time by allowing them to transfer ScriptMaker (FileMaker's built-in point and click programming capability) scripts (single or multiple scripts) from one FileMaker Pro database to another.

Building upon a new code base, FileMaker Pro now offers an object-oriented approach. Its new file format is not backward-compatible with previous versions of FileMaker Pro. (It will open files created with earlier FileMaker Pro versions, but earlier FileMaker Pro versions will not open files created with FileMaker Pro 5.)

Additional new features

FileMaker Pro 5 delivers numerous new features (see product fact sheet for more information) including QuickTime and QuickTime VR support, resizable dialog boxes, improved network database security, 3-D effects, custom color and Web-safe color palette, data merging for updating hand held and laptop-based FileMaker Pro data, a hands-on, task-oriented tutorial and more.

Availability and system requirements

FileMaker Pro 5 is immediately available from authorized resellers at $249 (estimated retail price U.S.). Competitive and product upgrades are available at $149 (estimated retail price U.S.).

System requirements for Windows users include the following: Intel?compatible computer (486/33 or later); 16MB of RAM; Windows 95 or Windows 98, Windows NT 4 (Service Pack 3); CD-ROM drive and hard drive. For Mac OS users, system requirements include the following: Power Macintosh; 16MB of RAM; Mac OS version 7.6.1 or later; CD-ROM drive and hard drive; and TCP/IP or AppleTalk network connection (required for sharing FileMaker databases over a network). Web publishing requirements (both platforms) include a host computer with continuous access to the Internet or intranet via TCP/IP; ISP for Internet access; and access to web-published databases is limited to 10 IP addresses per 12 hour period.
